Models for Resource Group Support Spaces for Parents/Caregivers of LGBTQ+ People

If your organization or one of your resource groups would like to start a support space for the parents and caregivers of LGBTQ+ people there are a variety of models to consider. The best model will depend on a variety of factors, such as whether there is ‘grassroots’ interest in starting a group, the availability of a new executive sponsor, whether your company has an existing structure in place for the creation of new resource groups, or a variety of other factors.

In recent years PFLAG National has worked with corporations big and small, and some of the models we’ve seen include:

  • In a company with a strong and thriving LGBTQ+ and allies employee resource group, a support group for parents of LGBTQ+ kids was formed
  • In a company with a strong and thriving parents & caregivers employee resource group, a support group for parents of LGBTQ+ kids was formed
  • In companies that do not have employee resource groups, a national group or committee was formed to support parents of LGBTQ+ kids
  • In companies with a strong enough need, a national group or committee was formed to support parents of lesbian, gay, and bisexual kids and another group was formed to support parents with transgender and nonbinary kids
