Models for Resource Group Support Spaces for Parents/Caregivers of LGBTQ+ People
If your organization or one of your resource groups would like to start a peer-support space for the parents and caregivers of LGBTQ+ people there are a variety of models to consider. The best model will depend on a variety of factors, such as whether there is ‘grassroots’ interest in starting a group, the availability of a new executive sponsor, whether your company had an existing structure in place for the creation of new resource groups, or a variety of other factors.
In recent years PFLAG National has worked with corporations big and small, and some of the models we’ve seen include:
- In a company with a strong and thriving LGBTQ+ and allies employee resource group, a support group for parents of LGBTQ+ kids was formed
- In a company with a strong and thriving parents & caregivers employee resource group, a support group for parents of LGBTQ+ kids was formed
- In companies that do not have employee resource groups, a national group or committee was formed to support parents of LGBTQ+ kids
- In companies with a strong enough need, a national group or committee was formed to support parents of lesbian, gay, and bisexual kids and another group was formed to support parents with transgender and nonbinary kids
Come back soon to access a “How-To Guide” that will help your group determine the best way to move forward. We’ll be sharing insights and best practices when it comes to topics like getting executive buy-in and how to fulfill the steps companies often require to form an ERG like defining a mission statement and identifying group leads.
Company Policies and Resources
PFLAG National recommends that organizations launching a support group for the parents and caregivers of LGBTQ+ people collect and share the internal policy documents listed below. Many families have to navigate a variety of new things after learning that a loved one is LGBTQ+ and may have questions about physical and mental healthcare benefits, relocation options, and more.
- Employee Handbook or Code of Conduct
- Healthcare Benefits
- Employee Assistance Program Resources
- Employee Resource Group Contacts
- Employee Relations Contacts
- Human Resources Contacts
- Union Contacts, If Applicable
